The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources has today, 23rd April, 2021 inspected work on the relaying of old pipes at Gbetseli in the Kpone-Katamanso municipality.
The relaying works is in accordance with the Ghana Water Company Limited’s (GWCL) effort to replace the fifty-five (55) year old and warn-out pipes which have outlived its purpose. The on-going works which is expected to be completed by Sunday 25th April, 2021 will see one hundred and twenty (120) meters of pipe line replaced. Each sectional pipe line is twelve (12) meters long and were locally manufactured by GWCL.
Ing. Dr. Clifford A. Braimah (M.D. GWCL) said the company will from Monday 26th April, 2021 flash and disinfect the new lines and ready them for water distribution. He further explained that, the company’s aim was to replace old pipe lines with new ones but financial constraints will only mean the replacement of the weakest sections in bits until the full plan is finally achieved.
COMMENDATION
Speaking to a section of the media, the Sector Minister, Hon. Cecilia Abena Dapaah commended GWCL for the work they were doing and charged them to implement, strictly, the laws that will bar encroachers from erecting buildings and other structures directly on pipe lines, since such activities were illegal and posed great danger to lives and property.
She also noted, that such maintenance culture would see the challenge of water losses (due to broken pipes) overturned and ensure that water quality is not compromised before it reaches the end user.
