The Deputy Minister Hon. Michael Yaw Gyato paid familiarization visits to the Accra and Ho Schools of Hygiene respectively in the course of the week. Following the institutional re – alignment as a result of the establishment of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water, the schools have been placed under the Ministry, previously under the Ministry of Health. Resources. Hon. Michael Yaw Gyato was in the Schools to acquaint himself with the challenges the Schools are going through following persistent complaints by the authorities of the various schools. The visit also afforded the Deputy Minister to discuss with the school authorities and students how to collectively resolve the challenges. He assured them of the Ministry’ support to provide the necessary infrastructure and logistics to enhance academic work at the schools.
The Deputy Minister also indicated that the ministry is putting in place measures to provide the students with employment after their graduation.
He however asked them to be innovative and proactive to create jobs for themselves since there is a limit to the number government can employ.
The Deputy Minister who represented the Sector Minister also said the African Development Bank has made available a grant facility of 5,000.000 US Dollars and 3, 000.00 US Dollars would be channeled to the provision of project in the school. The projects include expansion of classroom and hostel facilities, equipment for the schools laboratories and the putting up of new structures to increase intake of students. Some of the grievances the school authorities presented to the Deputy Minister included rehabilitation of the school’s access road, fencing of the school and hostel, additional hostel facility for students and residential accommodation for staff. They also appealed to government for adequate funds to run the schools since the schools depend solely on their Internally Generated Fund (IGF) to run the schools which is woefully inadequate.
