The Accra School of Hygiene was established in 1925 at Adjabeng in Central Accra during the regime of Sir Gordon Guggisberg, the then Governor of the Gold Coast. The purpose of the School at that time was to increase the number of people who would qualify as Sanitary Inspectors so that Ghanaians become well versed in proper sanitary practices. The School folded up during the Second World War II (1939-1945). This was because most of the students were drafted into the Gold Coast Regiment, which was part of the West African Frontier Force, which fought in India, Burma alongside Britain and the Allied forces; the School was re-established in 1945. On 5th April 1950, Dr. Silvyn Simon was appointed the Principal of the School to re-organise it. In 1959, the first Ghanaian, Mr. Barnabas Quarkyie was appointed as Principal of the School.

In 1962, the School was affiliated to the Royal Sanitary Institute of London, until 1963 when the Royal Society of Health, London upgraded it to Diploma awarding Institute. In 1974, the School was re-located to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the name of the profession was changed from Sanitary Inspector to Public Health Inspector. In 1983, Ghana and four other West African countries namely, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Gambia, broke away to form the West African Health Examination Board with its headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. This body was responsible for the award of professional certificate in Public Health Inspection for West African English speaking countries.
In 1995, Ghana broke away from the West African Health Examination Board (WAHEB) to form Ghana Health Examination Board (GHAHEB) to conduct examination and award Professional Certificates.
The School is currently affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the programmes offered cover a period of six semesters (3-years) to award Diploma. Graduates from the School are examined and licensed by the Ghana Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC).
In 2016/2017 academic year, the Ministry of Health mounted Diploma Programme in Occupational Therapy, and during the 2017/2018 academic year, Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety programme was also introduced to augment the health delivery services in Ghana.
